Basketball / How Do I?

Become a Coach

  • Volunteer, it's that simple.
    • The recreational leagues always need coaches.  In the basketball recreational leagues, coaches with children in the league receive a discount on their child's registration, $35 off .
    • The Hoops Competitive League offers the chance to form a team.  Put together a team and lead it.  Presto, you're a coach!
  • Form a Team
    • If you've been in the recreational leagues and you're team is 'gelling', keep 'em together, keep 'em playing.
    • The neighbor kids all play great backyard basketball; see how good they really are, enter them as a team in one of Hoops Free eXpo games where they play the full court.  If everyone is game for more, sign up for the Competitive League, Division 2.  Every Sunday night you'll have a game, at least for 8 weeks--more if you win in the tournament.
    • Checklist:
      • Call or gather 5-10 girls or boys who love the game.
      • Pick a name and colors.  Call Shively Sporting Goods or stop in at Hoops to determine the best uniform options, pricing, etc.   Shively offers Coach's packets with all sorts of goodies for a successful season.
      • Determine if and where you'll practice. Call Hoops to check court availability, 81 Hoops, x 116.
      • Clinics: Check Hoops upcoming clinics and let the pros instruct the kids.  Dads always learn a thing or two.  Coordinate with Coach Bibb or Coach Henry for some Coach's drills, tips, private sessions with your team or those individuals who need some extra work.
      • Conditioning: Get the team in shape with a Free workout in Hoops Athletic Republic.  Team discounts are available so you can keep the good thing going and arrive a lean, mean, fightin' machine.  Hint: the trainers always ask what you've had to eat today, make good choices or let them chart some nutritional guidelines for the team who wants every advantage (the parents will also love you if they see green on the dinner plate).
      • Enlist some support from other dads on the team, call them assistants.  One mom will hound you to death about the details, her great ideas, and more.  Make her the team mom and allow her to handle the details so you can focus on what you really want, basketball!
      • Register your new team:  (a few options)
        • Hoops eXpo games.  These are FREE.  Great for testin' the waters.
        • Competitive Division 2 League and see how ya do.
        • Hoops Tournaments
          • School Team Tournaments (school teams and kids who attend the same school; must all wear the same color jersey)
          • USSSA Tournaments qualify for State, Regional, National Championships
          • AAU Tournaments qualify for State, Regional, National Championships
          • Special Events: 3 on 3 Shootouts; Derek Smith events; Eddie Ford
      • Wow!  You did all that!  Pat yourself on the back Coach.  You made a difference.
